Tesla Model X recalled for airbag software fix

CarAdvice can exclusively reveal that Tesla will issue a recall this morning for all right-hand drive Tesla Model X vehicles, following the discovery of an airbag software fault.

The passenger airbag and associated software, which is supplied by Bosch, was subject to routine inspection when an anomaly in the supplier software was discovered.

While it’s not clear whether the anomaly prevented the airbag from deploying, Tesla has asked customers to avoid using the passenger seat until an over-the-air update is deployed this weekend.

In an email sent out to customers this morning, Tesla said:

“Although we’re not aware of a single customer car that has had an issue with it, there was an anomaly with the passenger airbag in a right-hand-drive Model X that was part of a routine internal test this week. After reviewing the results of this test, we were able to isolate the anomaly to the software controlling the passenger airbags in right-hand-drive Model X cars only, and we are already developing an over-the-air software update that fixes it. We will be deploying that update to all affected cars this weekend.”

“There is no need to bring your vehicle into service. All you need to do is accept the over-the-air software update that we will be deploying to your car. In the meantime, as a precaution, we recommend that the front passenger seat of your vehicle not be occupied until the software update is installed.”

Customers won’t be required to bring their cars into a Tesla service centre for the update and the update will immediately rectify the supplier issue. It’s unclear how many right-hand drive Model X vehicles are affected, due to the company not releasing sales numbers.

This could be the first instance in the world that a manufacturer has deployed a recall over the air — potentially a sign of things to come.
