Winning the treacherous Dakar Rally is a massive achievement in its own right. Winning six, then, is pretty damn respectable. Now though, Peugeot has revealed its latest off-road rally weapon it hopes will secure its seventh overall, and third straight, Dakar victory: the Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi.

The French carmaker’s successor to the 2017 Dakar Rally-winning Peugeot 3008DKR, the new Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi is not only tougher, it’s bigger.

With the team from Peugeot Sport working hard to better an already successful formula, the 3008 SUV-based Dakar car is 200mm wider than its predecessor, thanks to the track being increased by 100mm on each side in a bid to improve stability and, Peugeot Sport is hoping, outright performance.

Measuring 1799mm high, 4312mm long, and 2400mm wide, Peugeot says additional suspension changes for its new competition car comprise new upper and lower wishbones, new front and rear track rod ends, and new driveshafts.

Still undergoing development, the new Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi is scheduled to make its debut at next month’s 2017 Silk Way Rally (July 7-22), with nine-time World Rally Champion, and Team Peugeot Total driver, Sebastien Loeb at the helm.

Powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 producing 254kW of power and 800Nm of torque, the Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi claims a top speed of 200km/h and 460mm of suspension travel.

Following in the footsteps of not only its direct Peugeot 3008DKR predecessor but also the 2016 Dakar Rally-winning Peugeot 2008DKR, the 3008DKR Maxi is also rear-wheel-drive only.

Running from January 6-20 next year, the 2018 Dakar Rally – the 40th edition of the epic desert race – will take in three countries, starting in Peru, crossing through Bolivia, and drawing to a close in Argentina.

First unveiled at the 2016 Paris motor show, the all-new road-going second-generation Peugeot 3008despite delays – is due to launch locally in third quarter of this year.
