BMW M3, M4 to get new driveshaft due to emissions requirements

BMW has announced some running changes to the driveshafts in the M3 and M4 performance cars in preparation for new emissions regulations.

Starting from November 2017 production, the Bavarian company will replace the current carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) unit currently used in the M3 and M4 with a new M-specific high-performance driveshaft made of steel.

BMW says the new unit will allow for the installation of a petrol particulate filter (PPF) at a later date in ‘major markets’.

Despite the changes, the company assures the new driveshaft will not affect the performance or handling characteristics of the M3 and M4.

Models that will see the update include the M3 sedan, M4 coupe and M4 convertible. The special-edition M4 CS and M4 GTS are unaffected by the changes.
