Tesla Pickup teased
The surprise reveals from Tesla continue, with the company previewing an pickup based on the Semi revealed last week.
Shown during the launch of the Tesla Semi and manic Tesla Roadster, the design sketch above shows a fairly large ute with another ute sitting in the tray – CEO Elon Musk describes it as a “pickup that can carry a pickup truck”.
It’s believed the new vehicle will based on the same platform as the Tesla Semi, meaning it should share the big truck’s powerful electric powertrain and battery system.
Despite its links with the Semi (above, below), the ‘Pickup’ will not be classed as a heavy vehicle, according to Musk, which means drivers will be able to operate the vehicle with a conventional licence.
“You’ll actually be able to legally drive it with a driver’s licence. It’s kind of wrong, but I like it,” Musk said during his presentation.
In addition to its load-lugging capacity, the Tesla Pickup would redefine performance for the commercial ute segment if it utilises the same powertrain as the Semi, which claims a 0-60mph (0-96km/h) sprint of just five seconds.
Meanwhile, the high-density battery pack means the Pickup could also sport a highway-specific driving range of up to 500 miles (800km), with the ability to replenish 400 miles (645km) of range in 30 minutes with upcoming DC Megachargers.
Timing for this new ute is unknown at this stage, though it could come as soon as 2019 when the Tesla Semi enters production.
