2018 BMW 8 Series confirmed, concept car teased

The BMW 8 Series name has been revived by the Bavarian luxury car maker, and the large luxury coupe is slated to go on sale globally during 2018.

In addition to confirming the resuscitation of the nameplate, BMW has also stated it debut a concept version of the new 8 Series at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on 26 May 2017, European time.

Although the new coupe has been spied numerous times, most recently in late March, the false body panels underneath the disguise tape have so far done an excellent job of concealing the car’s styling features from our eyes. A convertible variant of the new 8 Series has also been spied.

This sketch suggests the new coupe will feature a LED head- and tail-light elements, a character line above the rear wheel arch, and a spoiler built into the boot lid. It will also retain the company’s signature Hofmeister kink.

The announcement regarding the new 8 Series was made overnight at the BMW Group’s annual general meeting.

Harald Krueger, head of BMW, stated: “The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up — a slice of pure automotive fascination. The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”

Speculation has been rife within the industry as to how BMW would go about replacing the current 6 Series range, with some intel suggesting a revival of the 8 Series name, and along with it a push upmarket and with a renewed focus on luxury.

A report last year also claimed the 6 Series name shift across to a new Porsche 911-fighter based on the platform of the upcoming BMW Z5 and Toyota Supra siblings.

Recently, news emerged that BMW had ceased production of the 6 Series coupe for the North American market.
