2019 BMW 4 Series GT to replace 3 Series GT, EV option coming – report

Bavarian automaker BMW is planning a slew of electric and electrified models, including a 4 Series GT, which will debut around 2019 – according to a new report out of the UK.

Autocar cites “highly placed insiders”, claiming the company is hard at work developing electric versions of three current models, alongside new-generation and updated versions of its electrified ‘i’ models by the end of the decade.

One of these new offerings is said to be the upcoming 4 Series GT, which will be based on the next-generation 3 Series platform, and effectively replace both the 3 Series GT (below) and 4 Series Gran Coupe (top) when it arrives in 2019.

Furthermore, the British publication says an all-electric version will arrive in the UK around 2020, offering equivalent performance to the current 313kW/630Nm 335d GT offered in Europe – which accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Projected driving range is said to be up to 500km from a circa-90kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with a starting price of less than 40,000 pounds ($69,863) to better compete with the upcoming Tesla Model 3.

According to Autocar, BMW is still deciding whether to give the 4 Series GT EV one or two electric motors, essentially tossing up between rear- and all-wheel drive.

In addition to the rumoured electric 4 Series GT, the company is also working on the Mini Cooper E and an all-electric version of its next-generation X3 SUV.

Previously, it seemed all of BMW’s future EVs would wear ‘i’ branding as opposed to being an extension of the base car’s range. However, it appears the electric cars could take a similar approach to the current iPerformance plug-in hybrid range and become variants of the core models instead.
