Nio EP9: Electric supercar sets new Nurburgring road-legal car record

The Nio EP9 electric supercar has set a new record for road-legal vehicles on the Nurburgring Nordschleife track.

According to the Chinese electric vehicle specialist, the EP9 lapped the famed German track in six minutes 45.9 seconds, which eclipses the seven minutes 5.12 second time it set back in October 2016 to claim the title of fastest EV around the course.

It is also significantly faster than the six minutes 52.01 second time recorded, controversially, by the series production Lamborghini Huracan Performante, and the six minute 48.28 second time recorded by the road-legal Radical SR8 LM.

The Nio EP9 has four electric motors, each with their own single-speed transmission. Together they generate a total peak power output of 1000kW. The EP9 can reportedly crush the 0-200km/h metric in 7.1 seconds, and hit a top speed of 313km/h.

With its removable battery packs fully charged, the Nio EP9 has a claimed driving range of 425km.

Last month, Nio confirmed it will build a second batch of 10 EP9 supercars. Each will be priced at US$1.48 million ($1.96 million).

Although the company is currently selling a small run of electric supercars and is involved in FormulaE, it has plans to break into mainstream markets.

At the recent Shanghai motor show, it revealed the nearly production-ready ES8 electric crossover. Nio also wants to be a player in the self-driving car arena, and has so far unveiled the Eve concept car and an autonomous version of the EP9.
