2017 Hyundai Accent Sport: New standalone variant arrives from $15,490

The Hyundai Accent has been updated this week, becoming a single variant range with the introduction of the Accent Sport – which starts from $15,490 before on-road costs.

Consistently the top-seller in the light-car segment, thanks to sharp pricing and the availability of both hatchback and sedan body styles, the previous Active and SR grades have been replaced by a single Sport variant, which gets additional kit over the previous base car but also misses out on some equipment that was included in the outgoing SR flagship.

Headlining the Sport’s specification list is the 1.6-litre GDi ‘Gamma’ petrol engine – previously reserved for the SR. Developing 103kW of power and 167Nm of torque, the Accent Sport significantly ups the outputs of the previous Active’s 74kW/133Nm 1.4-litre MPi ‘Kappa’ engine.

Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission as standard, or an optional six-speed automatic – replacing the outgoing Active’s continuously-variable shifter (CVT).

Standard equipment upgrades over the previous base car includes 16-inch eight-spoke alloy wheels, cruise control with steering-mounted controls, along with a premium sports steering wheel and gear knob.

Other features include a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay compatibility, AUX and USB inputs, bluetooth phone and audio streaming, air conditioning and power windows all round.

Notable exclusions from the new Accent Sport when compared to the outgoing SR include projector beam headlights with LED daytime-running lights, along with front fog-lights.

However, the new standalone Accent grade is only $500 more than the Active spec it replaces, starting at $15,490 plus on-road costs for the six-speed manual and $17,490 for the six-speed automatic.

The only option is metallic paint, which commands a $495 premium.

Note: We are waiting on more images of the new Hyundai Accent Sport. The interior shot from the outgoing SR can be used as a guide.
