2018 Volkswagen Polo teased ahead of debut this week

The tail-lights and side styling of the new Volkswagen Polo has been teased ahead of the car’s unveiling at the end of this week.

Overnight, Volkswagen issued its first official preview of the next-generation Polo hatchback. While we saw the new Polo practically undisguised back in March this year, this is the first time we’ve been given a clear view of the car’s tail-light graphics.

We also get a look at the new car’s orange hero colour, and a glimpse of a high-spec set of alloy wheels.

Announcing today’s teaser, Klaus Bischoff, head of design for the Volkswagen brand, claims the new Polo has “an expressive design which makes the compact sportier, cleaner and unique within the brand range”, which “fits in perfectly with our times — both visually and technologically”.

Under the skin, the new Polo uses the A0 variant of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB component set for front- and all-wheel drive vehicles with a transverse engine. MQB-A0 made its debut with the latest Seat Ibiza, and will eventually be used for the next-generation Skoda Fabia.

The company claims the new Polo will not only feature “numerous technological highlights”, but also “increased interior space”.

If the new Ibiza is anything to go by, the next-generation Polo will be roughly the same length as today’s four metre long car, but will be significantly wider, gaining almost 100mm across the hips.

The new Polo will be unveiled at an event in Berlin this Friday, European time. Last week, the company confirmed the larger Polo will enter Australian showrooms during the first quarter of 2018.
