If you live in Europe you will prefer a bold blue; if you’re from North America, chances are you’ll settle for silver; and if you’re from the Asia-Pacific region, aqua could be for you.

That’s right – my prediction that aqua is back appears to have been bang on the money, with German paint and chemical company BASF stating in its Automotive Colour Trends 2016/17 report stating there’s a parallax effect in play – that being, “objects appear shifted or changed when viewed from different angles”.

The findings from BASF Coatings division’s annual predictive report on car colours – which includes 65 examples of the colours BASF reckons will be popular in the coming years – suggests that “synthetic, metallic colours are on the rise”, and that “automotive colours will be influenced by the interconnection of digitalisation and social developments”.

According to the report, “the two competing vantage points that shape our modern world are: the fascination of the virtual world and the longing for honest self-expression”, and worldwide there’s a push from consumers towards colours that apparently invoke technological progress: synthetic options, metallic blues, silvers and whites.

In Europe, BASF says that multi-hue finishes are where the colour palette is moving, with deep metallic blues – like its highlighted colour, ASMR Blue (pictured above) – fitting the market, along with bold colours such as blood red, darker reds and greens, while black is “regaining strength and power by creating deep dark impressions”.

North America’s highlighted hue is Raingarden (above), a silver colour with “transitions between green and blue, depending on the viewing angle”. Yeah…. it kinda just looks silver, right?

And what about our aqua? As part of the Asia-Pacific region, according to BASF, the blue-green (above) colour represents optimism and playfulness “despite economic and other challenges in the region”.

BASF says that “Asians are looking for creativity and quality, which can be found in the delicate textures of a metallic sand beige colour, demonstrating the connection between traditional values and typical Asian elegance”.

Is colour on its way back in our market? What colour is your car, and what colour of the ones in the top palette appeals to you most?
