Ford Mustang smashes sales record as Aussie supply improves

Age is not tiring the Ford Mustang, which recorded its best monthly sales result in May by managing a barely believable 1351 units – despite no longer being the new kid on the block.

This monthly tally breaks the previous record of 786 units in September 2016. The 1351 figure gives the Mustang market share of 61.6 per cent. It’s also far and away Ford’s second-top-seller here behind Ranger, and ahead of Focus and Escape.

For context it also means the Mustang outsold conventionally mainstream offerings such as the Holden Astra, Honda Civic, Mazda 2, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester, Toyota Kluger and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Ford Australia says it has made “successful progress” securing more supply of Mustangs from the US after the car launched at the start of last year with long waiting lists.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard to secure more Mustangs for those who want to realise their dream, and we’ve achieved that for 1351 customers in May,” said Ford Australia sales director Greg Davidson.

“Since its arrival here in late 2015, Mustang has become Australia’s preferred sports car,” added Davidson. “It’s far exceeded our expectations, and we have Australian enthusiast and sports car lovers to thank for this.”

The Mustang’s yearly sales are 3772 units, while the company sold 6208 last year and 121 in December 2015. That makes more than 10,000 so far, the vast majority being GT V8 coupes, though the EcoBoost turbo-four is up 41 per cent in 2017.

Ford recently introduced a range of factory-backed, fully warranted parts that can be fitted by their local dealership. The Ford Performance parts include suspension components for improved handling and lowered stance, larger exhausts for the GT and a short-shifter for the six-speed manual.

Meanwhile the MY18 updated Mustang with more safety gear will lob in Ford Australia dealers early next year.
