Hyundai planning two more SUVs by 2020

Korean manufacturer Hyundai plans to continue the growth of its SUV line-up during the remainder of the decade, confirming plans to introduce sub-compact and upper-large SUVs.

Speaking with media at the international launch of the the Kona in Seoul, South Korea, a panel of the company’s executives confirmed there are plans to introduce an A-segment (sub-compact) crossover to sit below the just-revealed Kona, along with an E-segment (upper large) to sit above the Santa Fe.

A sub-compact SUV would likely duel with the likes of the Suzuki Ignis – which in Australia has few natural competitors – while the upper-large model would take on players like the Toyota Landcruiser – although perhaps not in the off-roading space.

With the larger model, however, it’s unclear just how large Hyundai will go. Currently, there is a long-wheelbase version of the Santa Fe (above) offered in select left-hand drive markets pitched as a proper seven-seater – the model sold locally is known in those markets as the five-seat Santa Fe Sport.

The development comes as Korean customers begin to show more preference towards SUVs, though sedans like the Grandeur and Sonata continue to dominate in Hyundai’s home market.

In addition to the two new crossovers, Hyundai is also set to embark on a new model onslaught in the coming years, with 14 ‘green’ models set to launch by 2020.

One of these new green cars will be the all-electric version of the recently-revealed Kona (above), with Hyundai targeting an impressive 390 kilometre range on a single charge.

Another eco-friendly addition to the company’s range will be the production version of the FE Fuel Cell concept that first appeared at this year’s Geneva motor show in March – due to make its production debut sometime next year with a range similar to the concept’s 800km claim.
