Lamborghini thinking of four-seat sports car, and a Miura successor

Lamborghini is mulling over new ways to expand its range of sports cars, with a four-seat vehicle and a modern take on the Miura possible.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Lamborghini, told attendees at the Automotive News Europe congress the company is “already thinking about” a four-seat sports car.

If that’s got you itching to call up your bank manager, he warned any possible four-seat Lamborghini sports car wouldn’t materialise until the “2025 to 2030 horizon”.

Domenicali also said the company is open to reinterpreting the Miura coupe for the 21st century “but not in the next 5 years”.

The Lamborghini CEO is also keen to reposition the brand, noting: “We used to be very polarising. People loved us or hated us. Now we are trying to be more cool, younger, but as always, different.”

Before any additional models are added to the range, the company needs to successfully launch and sell its upcoming crossover, the Urus. The company has expanded its factory, and expects to sell around 4000 Urus crossovers per annum by 2019, roughly doubling the company’s annual sales.

Based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform for front- and all-wheel drive cars with longitudinal engines, the Urus will be powered by a twin-turbo V8 with around 485kW of power. A plug-in hybrid variant will debut later.

The Urus will be launched at the end of 2017, but Domenicali revealed the first deliveries won’t begin until mid-2018.

In Europe, the Urus will be priced below 200,000 euros ($300,000). To give that number some context, the Huracan has a European starting price, before taxes, of 169,500 euros ($255,000).
