2017 Mercedes-Benz G300 CDI Professional launching in August

The Mercedes-Benz G300 CDI Professional is set to launch next month, with the stripped-out version of G-Wagen, er, wagon joining the single-cab utility at the low-end of the pricing spectrum.

The exact price is still to be determined, but it is expected that Mercedes-Benz Australia will position the five-seat wagon variant of the G300 CDI line-up will sit close the cab-chassis model, which is listed from $119,900 plus on-road costs.

As with the utility, the passenger-focused model will have a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. Power outputs are set at 135kW and 400Nm, and it has a full-time four-wheel-drive system with low range, live axles front and rear, and a trio of electronically control differential locks (front, centre and rear).

Unlike the cab-chassis version, the wagon has coil springs all around, so it should be a little more supple over bumps, and it’s the chassis setup that is also used by the vehicles employed for the Australian Defence Force, so it’ll be hardcore.

Expect it to have a 96-litre fuel tank to ensure worry-free trips in the scrub, and  service intervals of 12 months or 25,000km.

In the same vein as a LandCruiser 70 Series wagon, the G300 CDI has a sparse interior: rubber mats, manual windows, and non-remote central locking. It is expected that a PUR option pack with leather trim and front seat heating, not to mention power adjustable door mirrors and sturdy timber flooring in the cargo area, will be offered – but it isn’t confirmed as yet.
