2018 Holden Commodore VXR: Opel, Buick cousins revealed

Forming part of a timed global unveiling for all three brands, new Opel and Buick-badged versions of the car we’ll see as the 2018 Holden Commodore VXR have been revealed today.

Identical to the Holden-badged car revealed earlier today, these new Opel Insignia GSi and Buick Regal GS performance models will go on sale in Europe and the US respectively.

A Chinese debut for the Buick could also be on the cards, and, as always, the Insignia will wear a Vauxhall badge in the UK.

The Buick Regal GS will be powered by the same 235kW/381Nm 3.6-litre six that will drive the Commodore VXR, but the Opel Insignia GSi will instead get a 195kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo four, matched to an eight-speed auto instead of the nine-speed shifter that we’ll see.

Opel says that despite the Insignia GSi being less powerful than the Insignia OPC/VXR it replaces – at least for now – the new car’s 160kg lighter construction makes it quicker around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife than the 2.8-litre turbo V6 car it replaces. By how much, though, the company hasn’t said.

“It is this combination of low weight – especially on the front axle – low center of gravity, easy handling, high power over a wide rpm-band and best traction which makes the GSi so fast” says an enthusiastic Strycek. “That is pure efficiency. The high grip level is perfect for the Nordschleife and a fun-to-drive as well as safety advantage on public roads.”

The use of the GSi badge for the Insignia could also leave the door open to a more powerful OPC/VXR flagship, although Opel hasn’t offered any word on that potential just yet.
