Details about the facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class and its new inline six-cylinder petrol engines have finally been revealed.

When the company unveiled the updated S-Class range in April, the only confirmed petrol drivetrains were the S560 and S63 AMG, both powered by 4.0 twin-turbo V8 engines, and the 6.0-litre V12 S65 AMG model.

Also at the launch were the S350d and S400d variants, which feature the company’s new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Intriguingly left off the roster were models powered by the much anticipated 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol mill.

These, it was revealed today, will be known as the S450 and S500. The S450 features a 270kW/500Nm version of the engine, and is available in select markets with 4Matic all-wheel drive.

The S500 has 320kW of power and 520Nm of torque to its name, but is rear-wheel drive only.

Both engines are said to feature a 49V integrated starter/alternator, which can provide an extra 16kW of power and 250Nm of torque when required.

Mercedes-Benz says the new S500 six-cylinder is 22 per cent more fuel efficient than the old S500 with its 335kW/700Nm 4.6-litre twin-turbo V8. If this number translates through to its local fuel economy numbers, the new S500 will drink just 7.2L/100km.

Also announced today were the outputs of the S600 and S650 Maybach models, both of which feature a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. The S600 will have an unchanged 390kW/830Nm at its disposal, while the Mercedes-Maybach S650 will use the same 463kW/1000Nm motor found in the already announced Mercedes-AMG S65.

Australia

Models announced today will begin arriving in European dealerships from October 2017. We’re waiting to hear back from Mercedes-Benz Australia about local availability and timing.

Previously announced variants in the facelifted S-Class range are scheduled to arrive in Australia later this year.
