2018 Volvo XC40 rear shown briefly on official German site

The rear portion of the new Volvo XC40 crossover was revealed briefly on the company’s German website.

Before the teaser image (above) was taken down, it was reposted by Instagram user volvo.lov.

In the photo we can see the crossover’s hockey stick-style tail-lights, the grey plastic lower portion of the rear bumper, part of the alloy wheel design, and the stylised exhaust tip surrounds.

We know from earlier spy photos the XC40 will have styling that’s heavily influenced by the 40.1 Concept, and will include the show car’s dramatically upswept side window line.

Under the skin, the XC40 will be the first Volvo vehicle to use the company’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which will also underpin replacements for the S40 and V40, as well as the Lynk & Co 01 crossover and 03 sedan.

Motivation for the XC40 will come from the company’s new 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which will be tied to either an eight-speed automatic and, at least in Europe, a six-speed manual.

Higher end variants will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and, possibly, forced induction four-cylinder engines.

The XC40 will make its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show in September, and will go on sale locally during the second quarter of 2018.
