The Rolls-Royce Project Cullinan crossover has been spied being hustled through the many twists and turns of the Nurburgring Nordschleife, of all places.

Comparing spy photos of the new “high-bodied car” with those of the next-generation Phantom, it’s clear the two will have very similar styling up front.

This includes the company’s signature upright chrome grille, which is flanked by a set of softly rounded rectangular headlights.

Like the limousine, the Project Cullinan crossover will feature suicide doors. Dubbed coach doors by the company, the rear-hinged apertures will make ingress and egress easy for those sitting at the back.

False panels obscure the design of the car’s tailgate, but the crossover looks to be significantly shorter overall than the new Phantom.

Under the skin, the new SUV will share its aluminium underpinnings with the upcoming Phantom. Expect initial versions to have a V12 petrol engine paired with all-wheel drive.

A digital instrumentation cluster, air suspension, internet connectivity, and all the latest safety equipment should be available on the crossover.

Codenamed Project Cullinan, it’s not known what the new crossover will be christened, although an ethereal name tying it to the rest of the Rolls-Royce range — Phantom, Ghost, Dawn and Wraith — seems likely.

The new Phantom will debut soon before going on sale in 2018, and the Project Cullinan SUV has been confirmed for a 2019 debut.
