Audi offers rides in self-driving car to the public
Audi is offering select members of the public a 60 minute ride in the driver’s seat of a vehicle from its autonomous driving development fleet.
Riders will be chosen from social media feeds run by Audi Germany. Raffle winners and high mileage users of the Audi On Demand service will also participate in the ride-along program.
The route starts at the MyAudi Sphere at Munich airport, and includes a portion of the A9 autobahn, which has been designated the “digital motorway test bed”.
During the self-driving portion of the journey, the car will hit a top speed of 130km/h, and will steer, brake, accelerate, and predictively change lanes by itself. An Audi employee will always be on board during the journey.
The autonomous ride program will run from July 20 through to some time in August. The self-driving development team will ask participants for their opinions and impressions, and incorporate the feedback into their work.
The autonomous car involved in this program is an Audi A7 nicknamed Jack, which has driven itself on three continents. The vehicle made a splash at CES 2015, when it drove itself, with journalists in the driver’s seat, most of the way from Silicon Valley, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada.
