BMW M2: Strong demand drives bigger allocation for Oz

High local demand for the BMW M2 has seen the company secure additional allocation of its entry-level ‘M’ car, the company says, cementing Australia’s position as the premier BMW M market.

Since its introduction in April last year, the BMW M2 has shifted 671 units, and year-to-date is the M brand’s most popular model.

Marc Werner, CEO for BMW Group Australia, said continued high demand for the smallest M model in Australia contributed to the additional allocation for our market.

“Demand for the BMW M2 has been strong from the outset,” he said. “This presented us with a strong base to ask for further supply increases to match the sustained demand.”

“From an initial 300-unit Australia allocation, we were successful in securing 400 M2s [in 2016], which were quickly snapped up,” Werner added.

In Australia, BMW’s percentage of M sales against total sales have increased to 6.1 per cent, which is the highest percentage globally for a developed market – the world average is just 2.0 per cent.

This latest announcement follows from last year’s local allocation increase which, as Werner mentions above, was increased from 300 to 400 units shortly after the M2’s Australian launch.

Starting at $89,900 before on-road costs, the BMW M2 is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six developing 272kW of power and 465Nm of torque, enough to send the little coupe from 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds when fitted with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
