Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4×4²: Wild one-off special lives up to its name

An engineer from German marque Mercedes-Benz has created a wild off-road version of his E-Class All-Terrain crossover wagon, dubbed the E-Class All-Terrain 4×4².

Jurgen Eberle, one of the company’s vehicle development engineers, decided to make a series of modifications to his E-Class All-Terrain, in a fashion similar to Merc’s own G500 4×4² off-roader.

Modifications include a pair of portal axles from the G500 4×4², increasing the ground clearance to a massive 16 inches (406.4mm) – up from 160mm – and a set of 31-inch tyres, while the overall track has been widened by 8.0 inches (203.2mm).

Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine – likely the same unit found in the E400 – also making it the only E-Class All-Terrain in the world with a petrol motor.

According to the UK’s Auto Express, the reaction from Mercedes-Benz’s bosses has been so positive that the company is looking into producing a limited run for the public.

Eberle has said the reaction from several markets that have seen the vehicle have had an overwhelmingly positive response.
