Would you spend $10,000-plus to improve your lap time by two seconds?

This story has a long gestation, beginning as it does back in October last year. CarAdvice co-founder Tony Crawford, was given the enviable task of representing CarAdvice (and Australia)  in the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup Global Invitational, an SCCA sanctioned race meet at the challenging Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Northern California.

In short, the best MX-5 Cup racers (and Tony) from around the world squared off against each other over a weekend of practice, qualifying and racing around the challenging Laguna Seca circuit.

Tony’s aim was simple: to see the chequered flag at the end of the weekend and to improve his lap times. And in that, he was successful, finishing the weekend 15th overall while also shaving around 2.5 seconds off his lap times – from 1:53 in opening practice to 1:50.5 in the final race.

But, not satisfied and with the frontrunners lapping around the 1:42 mark, Tony just knew there was much, much more time to be found. And he was determined to find that time…

How determined?

The chance to go back to Laguna Seca in an attempt to slash a few tenths off his lap time, doesn’t come cheap for Tony – 10 grand – and that’s if he doesn’t break the car. Bend it, burn it or wreck it and he’s likely to be up for a brand new MX-5 Cup car priced at $75,000.
