2018 Porsche Cayenne teased ahead of debut next week

The third-generation Porsche Cayenne will be unveiled on August 29, European time, and to celebrate its impending debut, the sports car maker has released a set of photos of the new SUV during extreme hot and cold weather testing.

To fine tune the car for paved roads, the new Cayenne, codenamed ‘E3’, has been put through its paces at the Nurburgring, Hockenheim, and Nardo race tracks. Various prototypes have also been tested on- and off-road in Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and Sweden.

Trips to Death Valley, Dubai, and Alaska have seen the crossover tested in temperatures as a high as 50 degrees Celcius, and as low as minute 45 degrees.

Collectively, Porsche says the Cayenne test fleet has covered around 4.4 million kilometres, with some cars notching up 240,000km within a few months.

Under the skin, the Porsche Cayenne will use the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform for front- and all-wheel drive cars with longitudinal engines.

Once again, the Cayenne will be closely related to the Volkswagen Touareg, although this time around the two cars will have completely unique exterior designs.

Earlier spy photos show the Touareg will have sharply cut details and plenty of straight lines, while the new Cayenne will feature softer, more organic shapes.

Motivation is likely to come from a selection of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A pair of hybrid models will also be available.

A range-topping model with a total of 500kW/850Nm and a twin-turbo V8 has already been confirmed, and a less powerful edition featuring a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 is likely.
