The Baojun E100 electric two-seater has gone on limited sale in China for a startlingly low price.

Powering the Baojun E100 is an electric motor with 29kW of power and 110Nm of torque that’s capable of projecting the car to a top speed of 100km/h.

The E100’s lithium-ion battery pack is said to be good for a driving range of 155km, which GM says makes it “an excellent choice for many urban daily commutes in China”. The car takes 7.5 hours to fully recharge via mains power.

With styling that instantly calls to mind the Smart ForTwo, the Baojun E100 seats just two people within its compact body. Standing 1670mm tall, and with a wheelbase just 1600mm long, the E100 looks to be smaller than the German city car.

The E100 features independent front suspension, and a single-arm rear suspension setup. Safety features include anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, electric power steering, ISOFIX anchorage points, and a pedestrian alert system.

Available features include parking sensors, a 7.0-inch display, a high-resolution instrumentation screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, keyless entry, air filter, air conditioning, electric windows, and steering wheel audio controls.

The order books are open for residents of Guangxi province, where Baojun is headquartered. The Baojun E100 has a starting price of 35,800 renminbi ($6710) after national and local subsidies.

It may hard to get your hands on the E100, though, with over 5000 expressions of interest in the first 200 vehicles, which went on pre-order on July 10. Today, the company made another 500 cars available for order. It’s not known when the car will go on wider sale.

Baojun was established in 2010 as a value-for-money brand for the Chinese market, and is operated as a joint venture between GM and its local partner SAIC, which independently owns the MG brand.
