Dodge’s last Viper rolls off the production line
The last-ever Dodge Viper rolled off the production line at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit last week.
Head of Design for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ralph Gilles, has been posting photos on his Instagram account of the final moments as he was there to bid farewell to the red Viper, which will be kept as part of the Dodge heritage collection.
“The ‘Gen5’ had a great five model-year run and the Viper platform, which has not changed that much over the years, had a great 25-year run,” said Gilles.
Although the Viper isn’t officially available here in Australia, sales have declined for the 8.4-litre V10 muscle car in America, even with Dodge having cut $US30,000 off the list price to encourage sales after the company went bankrupt in 2010.
But, according to Gilles, it was more about new federal safety standards that drove the Viper to its grave.
“It sold well over the last couple of years at a great mix of mostly ACRs in the last 15 months. It has more to do with a new ejection-mitigation regulation airbag that simply won’t fit in our package,” said Gilles.
A yellow Viper with black stripes (above) was the last customer-built car off the line.
Farewell, old friend.
