McLaren proves car design is child’s play with all-new open-top sportster

British supercar brand McLaren Automotive has revealed its most affordable open-top sports car ever, and it’s apparently been “designed with family in mind”.

A collaboration between McLaren Automotive and North American toy manufacturer, The Step2 Company, the new wheels don’t feature the UK performance marque’s well-known twin-turbocharged V8, but instead rely on parents for propulsion.

Based on the recently unveiled McLaren 570S Spider, McLaren says the 570S Step2 Push Sports Car provides “practical support for modern living by allowing parents to carry out their daily tasks or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll in the park without needing a conventional stroller.”

Apart from a flat-bottom steering wheel and Step2’s ‘smooth-riding’ ‘Whisper Wheels’, the kid-friendly sports car – which debuted in prototype form at February’s Spielwarenmesse toy fair in Nuremburg, Germany – features 570S decals, under-seat storage, multiple cup holders, and electronic sounds that promise to deliver “an exhilarating experience for mini-racers”.

“Designers from McLaren Automotive and Step2 worked closely together to replicate the essence of the real McLaren 570S,” a release on the new ‘car’ reads.

Set to launch in the US in September priced from US$79.99 – initially only in Ventura Orange – McLaren says the 570S Step2 Push Sports Car will be rolled out to wider markets later in the year. Phew!

For big kids here in Australia – well, rich big kids anyway – the McLaren 570S range kicks off at $379,000 for the 419kW/600Nm Coupe, with the $435,750 570S Spider due to land on local shores in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Seemingly happy to enjoy and embrace the lighter side of life, the Step2 570S follows both fun– and full-size replicas of McLaren’s 529kW/770Nm flagship supercar, the $489,900 720S.
