Toyota Aurion production has ended

Australia’s Toyota Aurion is now out of production, with the final unit rolling off the line at the Altona plant in Melbourne’s west this week.

The Aurion sedan’s retirement comes a few months before Altona shutters for the final time, with the local Camry Hybrid ending production in September and the Camry petrol on October 3.

As we know already, this means Toyota’s local plant will shut its doors 17 days before Holden closes its factory near Adelaide, leaving the Lion brand as the last one standing. Briefly.

Beyond that, a new-generation Camry will be imported to Australia from a factory in Japan, with four-cylinder and V6 petrol engines, and a petrol-electric hybrid to sell concurrently.

As such, the Aurion badge will meet its end.

It’s been a storied run for the FWD Aurion, Toyota’s answer to the big-Aussie V6 family sedan, which broke cover at the 2006 Melbourne motor show, and succeeded the Avalon.

More than 180,000 were made here over the course of 11 years and two generations, 110,000 of which were sold here and 70,000 of which were exported.

Powering the Aurion is a 200kW/336Nm 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine. By contrast, the imported 2018 Camry V6’s new 3.5 unit has 225kW/360Nm, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Melbourne-based Chadstone Toyota dealer principal, Graeme Ward, was at Altona to take delivery of the final Toyota Aurion – a high-grade white Presara – meeting with the team who built the final car.

As part of Toyota Australia’s transition to a national sales and distribution company, the consolidation of all corporate functions from Sydney to Melbourne will take effect from the start of 2018.

The number of direct Toyota Australia employees will reduce from 3900 people to approximately 1300. From 2018 onwards, Ford Australia will be the nation’s largest auto OEM employer thanks to its Victorian engineering and design hubs.
