2018 Toyota Landcruiser Prado revealed: Here in November without V6 petrol

The newly-updated 2018 Toyota Landcruiser Prado has been revealed at this week’s Frankfurt motor show, with the Japanese carmaker putting an increased focus on safety for buyers of the rugged off-roader.

Outside, a refreshed exterior is highlighted by a revised – and decently chrome-heavy – grille, restyled headlights, re-profiled fenders, and a potentially polarising new bonnet, which Toyota says has been sculpted “to enhance downward visibility”.

New front and rear bumpers further help distinguish the new Landcruiser Prado from the current car, with tweaked tail-lights and a smaller rear garnish plate incorporated within the number-plate surround also added.

In an effort to lift cabin ambience and quality, Toyota says the Prado’s dashboard, instrument binnacle, and switchgear have all been redesigned, as has the family hauler’s centre console.

Importantly, Toyota’s pre-collision autonomous emergency braking (AEB) safety system is now able to detect pedestrians along with other vehicles. The technology has trickled down from the higher VX and Kakadu variants into automatic versions of the popular entry-level GX and GXL grades as well.

Adaptive cruise control has also been added across the Prado range, as has automatic high beams and lane-departure alert, however, there’s no mention of any lane-keep assist-type system. The second-from-top VX trim grade additionally now also receives both blind-spot monitoring and a rear cross-traffic alert – features previously reserved for the flagship Kakadu model.

With the existing 2.8-litre four-cylinder common-rail turbo-diesel engine accounting for 98.8 per cent of sales in Australia, Toyota’s local arm has made the decision to drop the current Prado’s 207kW/381Nm 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the line-up.

Petrol power gone, the 2018 engine line-up will carryover the two currently available versions of the 130kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel: one with 450Nm of torque teamed with the six-speed automatic transmission, and one with 420Nm of torque mated to the six-speed manual transmission.

Toyota Australia says further details, including pricing for the 2018 Toyota LandCruiser Prado and a full list of new features, will be announced closer to the model’s November 2017 local launch, however as a guide, the current range is priced from $54,050 to $85,900 before on-road costs.
