2018 Volvo XC40 accidentally revealed a week early

The new Volvo XC40 has been accidentally revealed by the company’s Hungarian affiliate a week ahead of the car’s official unveiling.

With its launch scheduled for September 21, European time, Volvo posted a teaser video, with the XC40 dimly lit and artfully obscured, to its social media accounts.

Its Hungarian outpost, attempting to follow suit, posted a version of the video without the mysterious lighting and obfuscation techniques. Naturally, the offending video has since been taken down, but websites, including Carscoops, managed to snag screenshots before it was wiped from the internet.

As we’ve long suspected from spy photos, the XC40 will go into production looking almost identical to the Concept 40.1.

The eagle-eyed will notice slightly different bumpers, protruding front and rear door handles, proper wing mirrors, a slightly more conventional grille, and thicker tail-lights.

The video also gives us a clear view of the car’s interior, which features the same pared back aesthetic as the larger XC60 and XC90 models. Buttons and switches are kept to a minimum thanks to a large portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system.

Wireless smartphone charging, and a versatile boot with storage hooks and multiple levels will be available in the new XC40.

Specifics about the car’s drivetrain options will have to wait until the crossover’s official launch. A new 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired to either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual will lead the line.

A plug-in hybrid drivetrain and, possibly, forced induction four-cylinder engines will be used for higher priced variants.

The XC40 will be the first model to use Volvo’s newly developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). This platform will also be found underneath replacements for the S40 and V40, as well as the Lynk & Co 01 crossover and 03 sedan.

After making its international debut next week, the new XC40 will go on sale down under during the second quarter of 2018.
