The reborn Borgward is at it again, with this, the Isabella concept – reviving a nameplate the company used during the 1950s and 1960s.

The now Chinese-funded German brand has taken the wraps of this 2+2 electric coupe at the Frankfurt motor show, designed by former Mini design boss, Anders Warming.

Although it may not feature obvious design links to its 1950s ancestor, the Borgward Isabella concept does bring retro cues like a two-tone exterior paint and interior trim colour schemes, while also combining modern and futuristic elements like a pillarless mid-section and a coupe-like roofline.

There’s a little bit of Porsche Panamera in the overall shape, while the pointy face and diamond-shaped badge could easily be mistaken for one of Renault’s design studies. It’s a large beast, too, measuring 5.0 metres long 1.9 metres wide.

Inside, the futuristic look continues, with a minimalistic approach to switchgear, flowing lines, and a curved panoramic display running the width of the cockpit.

“Our aim was to create stylistic synergies between beauty and technology,” said Anders Warming.

Having already released the seven-seat BX7 SUV in the Chinese market, Borgward is looking to return to Europe more than half a century after going bust.

The smaller BX5 prototype and Projekt BX6 TS crossovers revealed last year also hint at the company’s plans to tackle nations outside of China, all of which offer plug-in hybrid technology.
