Polestar declares ‘the end’ to co-branding Volvo cars

Polestar has reminded the world that it will soon step out as an independent marque with a simple and slightly mysterious post on social media.

The company didn’t include any descriptive text with its Instagram post (above), leaving us to speculate the split between Polestar and Volvo is now complete.

In June this year, Volvo confirmed speculation Polestar would soon become its own “separately-branded electrified global high performance car company”.

At present the company develops and co-brands high performance variants for various Volvo models. This is expected to cease, although the company will continue to make and market optimisation kits for Volvo vehicles under the Polestar Engineered brand.

With its own management team, Polestar is due to announce how it will begin delivering on its promise of a “fabulous portfolio of bespoke products” in the northern autumn.

Although it will become a brand in its own right, Polesar “will enjoy specific technological and engineering synergies with Volvo Cars”. In all likelihood, Polestar’s new vehicles will be based on the Volvo-developed CMA small car, and SPA medium and large vehicle platform.

Originally an independent company, Polestar began collaborating with Volvo in 1995 in the motorsports field. It took until 2013 before the first Polestar tuned and branded landed in showrooms.

Volvo purchased the tuning division in 2015, leaving the motorsports operation as a standalone operation.
