Daihatsu DN Campagno, DN Pro Cargo concepts unveiled

The Daihatsu DN Campagno and the Daihatsu DN Pro Cargo concept cars will make their debuts at the 2017 Tokyo motor show.

The Daihatsu DN Campagno concept is billed as a “compact four-door coupe for active seniors”. Although the car features four doors, the aggressive coupe-like roof line means the “priority [is] on the front seat” passengers.

Inside, there’s a dashboard combining futuristic and retro elements, and front seats where “two adults can relax comfortably”. To cement the car’s old school appeal, the steering wheel, grille and boot all feature retro Daihatsu badges.

The retro flavour comes from the fact that the concept’s name and some of its styling cues are borrowed from the Campagno range of small vehicles, which debuted in 1963.

Designed in part by Italian coachbuilder Vignale, the original Campagno range included a van, station wagon, ute, cabriolet, and two- and four-door sedans. Sold between 1963 and 1970, the Campagno was Daihatsu’s first passenger car.

Under the bonnet, the DN Campagno features a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine, although Daihatsu admits the car can also be packaged with a 1.2-litre hybrid drivetrain.

No word yet on the power, torque, fuel economy or performance figures for the DN Campagno.

The other debutant at Daihatsu’s stand will be the DN Pro Cargo, which is a more traditional Japanese kei-car concept.

With its exceptionally high roof and low floor, the DN Pro Cargo is claimed to have a ceiling to floor height of 1.6 metres. Not only does its proportions provide plenty of interior space for a small footprint, but it also enables walkthrough capability.

Daihatsu says the vehicle was designed to be “easy to use even for women and seniors”, and has “variable rich multi-unit system”, which allows it to be configured for a wide variety of different uses and industries.

The DN Pro Cargo is said to feature an electric drivetrain, although no specifics have been provided thus far.
