Porsche previews Mission E with Cayman e-volution and Turbo Charging system

Porsche has used the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Stuttgart to provide a peek at its electric future. Along with the one-off Cayman e-volution concept, the company unveiled an 800-volt fast charging system.

When it announced plans to produce the Mission E, Porsche claimed owners would be able to charge their cars to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes using an in-house fast charger. The new ‘Porsche Turbo Charging’ system looks set to make good on that promise.

Porsche says the 800V quick charger can deliver up to 320kW of power or “twice 160kW”, which suggests it feeds two ports in the car simultaneously. By way of comparison, Tesla Superchargers operate at 480V and provide up to 120kW of power to connected vehicles.

The first Turbo Charging station has already been installed in Berlin, with another to follow in Atlanta, Georgia. The system will eventually make up part of a charging network on highly trafficked European routes, set to be developed by Porsche, Audi, BMW, Daimler and Ford.

And the car? The Cayman e-volution is only a concept, designed to demonstrate the performance Porsche can squeeze from an all-electric powertrain. It hits 100 km/h from a standstill in just 3.3 seconds, and has a claimed 200-kilometre range from its battery pack.

When it arrives in 2019, the Mission E is expected to offer over 500km of range on a full charge. Performance specs are yet to be announced, but the initial concept was fitted with a 440kW four-wheel drive powertrain when it was shown in 2015.
