Subaru WRX and STI recalled, audio system too hot to handle

Subaru Australia’s importer and distributor is conducting a recall of 4017 WRX and WRX STI performance sedans made in 2015 due to a potential fire risk.

The cause? A hectic subwoofer design flaw, whereby cargo could set off an electric short circuit, leading to flames.

Subaru says that one instance of a sub-related overheat has actually occurred in Australia, which in part has led to this recall.

“If cargo contacts the underside of the subwoofer that protrudes into the boot area in certain MY15 WRX and WRX STI vehicles, an electrical short circuit may be created and this may cause the subwoofer to overheat,” the recall notice says.

“What are the hazards? Risk of fire if the subwoofer speaker overheats.”

The sub unit is situated in the boot. In short, one of its connecting wires can be nudged by cargo into the box’s metal frame. The resulting intermittent short could create a repeating current, causing an overheat.

Potentially affected customers will be contacted in the near future by Subaru Australia, advising them of the recall.

The rectification consists of testing the subwoofer operation and incorporating a spacer clip to prevent the wire moving from its normal position. The process will take an hour.
