Top driving roads around Melbourne: Reefton Spur

Welcome to another instalment of our little Top Driving Roads series, intended to highlight some of the best, most challenging, and most fun roads we (occasionally) get to drive on.

To clarify, driving isn’t always about going fast; we want to make that bit clear. But while some people love the idea and feeling of straight-line speed, others – such as myself – have always revelled in the unadulterated bliss that is an endlessly entertaining strip of twisty tarmac (or gravel, if so inclined).

And on that note…

Warburton-Woods Point Road – C511

Snaking its way deep into Victoria’s exquisite Yarra Ranges National Park, the C511 is one of the single best roads I’ve ever had the pleasure to drive.

Every chance I get to drive here, I take it. No exceptions.

Stretching 20km from the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park near Reefton to the Cumberland Junction – itself around 20km from the snow fields of Lake Mountain – the exceptionally well-maintained road provides even the most die-hard enthusiast, with enough tantalising low- and higher-speed corners to often seem almost endless.

Combining gorgeous views and cool temperatures with (generally) little-to-no traffic, the C511 is also not too far from the relatively busy hubs of Marysville or Warburton – depending on which direction you’re approaching from.

Wildlife – as is often the case out in the hills – can be an issue, so keep an eye out for wombats and even deer (not kidding). The C511, though, is a special road located in a very special part of the world.
