2018 Infiniti QX50 revealed ahead of LA debut

The 2018 Infiniti QX50 has been revealed in a single image ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles motor show next week.

The single frontal image doesn’t offer any surprises, looking very much like a toned-down version of the QX50 concept revealed at the Detroit motor show earlier this year (below).

Set to rival the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, the second-generation Infiniti QX50 will feature the world’s first variable-compression petrol engine, said to offer diesel-rivalling fuel economy while offering class-leading performance.

Likely to be the flagship powerplant, the 2.0-litre variable-compression turbo four has outputs rated at 200kW and 390Nm, making it comparable to the outgoing car’s 242kW/361Nm 3.7-litre aspirated V6.

According to Nissan’s head powertrain engineer, Shinichi Kiga, the V-CT-powered QX50 should accelerate from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) almost one second quicker than its four-cylinder rivals.

In addition to the class-leading performance claim, the company says the 2.0-litre mill should improve fuel economy by 27 per cent compared to the V6.

The new engine will be mated as standard to a continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

We’re yet to see what the rear and interior look like, so stay tuned for an update once the QX50 is fully revealed.
