NSW makes rego free for frequent toll users
Drivers who spend more than $25 per week on tolls will get free registration in New South Wales, under a new State Government plan.
NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, says the move is designed to help drive down the cost of owning a car in New South Wales.
“The majority of eligible motorists will save $358 a year on registration costs, with potential savings of up to $715 a year,” Berejiklian said today.
The scheme, which starts on July 1 next year, will be backdated, meaning motorists will be eligible for scheme if they’ve been spending $25 per week since the start of July 2017.
Savings will depend on how much your car weighs. Vehicles below 975kg will be eligible for a $272 saving, while owners of cars in the top 2505 – 2794kg registration bracket (think Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol) are $715 better off.
Any vehicle weighing more than 2795kg won’t be included in the scheme, which includes all existing toll roads, along with any developed in future. Anyone using the M5 motorway will need to keep participating in the ongoing cash-back scheme.
