Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder on the way with GT3 flat six – report

Porsche is reportedly working on a new pair of hardcore 718 models, both of which will trade turbo-four power for the aspirated flat-six engine from the 911 GT3.

According to a new article by Autocar, the German sporting marque is developing a new 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Boxster Spyder, badges that were used on the most focused versions of the previous-generation Cayman and Boxster.

What’s really news, though, is that a version of the 4.0-litre flat six from the manic 911 GT3 is claimed to be the motor of choice for the Boxster Spyder, which would make it a formidable drop-top track weapon. Autocar reckons a power output of 425bhp (317kW) is likely.

For reference, the previous Boxster Spyder used the 276kW 3.8-litre aspirated flat six from the 911 Carrera, good for a 4.5-second sprint from 0-100km/h.

The Cayman GT4 used an even more powerful version of that engine, pumping out 283kW and claiming a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds.

Autocar says that a manual transmission will be fitted as standard to reiterate the driver-oriented focus, though a quick-shifting seven-speed PDK dual-clutch shifter will be optionally available.

Other changes include various weight-saving methods like less sound deadening, the deletion of the media and air-conditioning systems, along with a manual ‘tent’ roof compared to the stock car’s electrically-folding one.

Currently, the most potent 718 Boxster and Cayman model you can buy is the 269kW/430Nm GTS (above), which feature an uprated version of the S’s 2.5-litre turbocharged four.

Considering the GTS can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, you can expect the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Boxster Spyder – should they make it to market – to be very quick indeed.

Timing for the track-focused pair is said to be sometime in the second half of next year. Stay tuned.
