2018 Audi RS4: Initial details revealed

Preliminary Australian details for the 2018 Audi RS4 have been revealed this week, ahead of the new model’s launch in April next year.

Expected to cost in the “mid-$150,000” bracket before on-road costs, the wagon-only RS4 will feature a higher level of specification than the previous generation, with items like the RS sports exhaust, Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), and the rear sports differential to be included as standard.

At the heart of the German performance wagon is a 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 shared with the RS5 coupe, developing 331kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

That grunt is channelled to the ground through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

Audi claims the RS4 can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds, or 0.6 seconds faster than the outgoing model with its 331kW/430Nm 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8.

Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, though opting for the RS dynamics package ups that barrier to 280km/h. Fuel economy, meanwhile, is rated at 8.8L/100km on the combined cycle.

Being a wagon-only proposition, the RS4’s only real natural rival at this stage is the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate ($159,711), which also claims to sprint to triple figures in 4.1 seconds despite being rear-wheel drive, thanks to its 375kW/700Nm 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8.

There’s also the Alpina B3 S BiTurbo Touring ($149,900) – a 324kW/660Nm version of the BMW 3 Series Touring – which claims a 4.3-second sprint from 0-100km/h.
