The Mazda BT-50 ute has been recalled over concerns grass and other debris could accumulate in the underbody, potentially posing a fire hazard.

Owners are warned that driving over high grass – particularly dried-out grass – can cause the buildup of debris, and come into contact with the vehicle’s exhaust system.

If the condition occurs, there is a risk the debris could be ignited by the exhaust, causing a fire in the underbody area.

Mazda recommends customers avoid driving across areas covered by high grass or vegetation, and says owners should visually check the underbody to see if there is a buildup of debris.

Affected ‘UR’ BT-50 utes were produced from 23 June 2016 onwards, with VIN ranges starting from MM0UR0YE100603456 in 2.2-litre models and MM0UR0YG100597524 in 3.2-litre models.

Owners of the recalled units will be contacted by Mazda Australia, and will be advised to visit their local dealer when a solution is developed.
