2019 Fisker EMotion debuts, solid state battery coming later
The Fisker EMotion has been given its full debut at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The EMotion is powered by a set of electric motors generating at least 575kW of power, with drive sent to all four wheels. The EMotion rides on 24-inch alloy wheels fitted with low rolling resistance Pirelli rubber.
The company claims the sedan can crack the 0-60mph (0-97km/h) standard in under three seconds, and shoot on through to a top speed of 259km/h.
At launch, the EMotion will have an estimated driving range of 644 kilometres (400 miles). Later on, the vehicle will adopt the company’s patented flexible solid-state battery technology.
Fisker says the new battery tech could be used in personal electronic devices from as early as 2018, and should be ready for automotive applications “sometime after 2020”.
The company’s solid-state battery has “three-dimensional electrodes”, and reportedly has an energy density 2.5 times greater than today’s lithium-ion batteries.
Equipped with this new battery type, the EMotion will have a range over 805km (500mi), and a recharge time as a low as a minute.
Entry and exit to the car is governed by its unique butterfly doors, which can be operated via a smartphone app. According to the Fisker, each door has touch and proximity sensors so they can “smoothly open up and out of the way”.
The car’s cabin is covered in soft-touch leather, with a vegan-friendly interior optional. At the front there are three driver-oriented screens, including a curved unit in the centre of the dashboard. At the back, the EMotion can ordered with a 27-inch curved screen.
The EMotion is available as a four-seater with electric seat adjustment for each passenger, or as a five-seater with a rear bench seat.
Other features include inductive charging smartphone holders, a carbon-fibre centre console with tablet and accessory storage, and an adjustable four-zone electrochromic glass roof.
Equipped with five LIDAR sensors, the EMotion is said to be capable of up to level four autonomous driving.
Production of the EMotion will take place in the US, although the location won’t be announced until the second half of 2018. The car is expected to become available from 2019, with a starting price of US$129,000 ($164,000).
