Ford teases new ST model ahead of Detroit

Ford Performance has released a preview of a new ST model heading for the 2018 Detroit motor show next week.

The 25-second clip shows American stunt driver Ben Collins and another gentleman browsing some of the current Ford Performance portfolio, including the new GT supercar, the F-150 Raptor ute, and the Shelby GT350R Mustang.

Finally, the pair turn their attention to an unidentified vehicle, with the video showing a close-up of the blue car’s ‘ST’ badge which forms part of the slogan “STay tuned”.

Now the question – what is it? The American press is throwing around several ideas.

Some speculate it’s the US version of the new-generation Fiesta ST (above), though apparently Ford’s North American arm isn’t planning to bring the new hatch to the States.

Another rumour is that Ford has prepared a new EcoSport ST to fill the gap left by the absence of the Fiesta ST – a sport-styled ST-Line already exists in markets like Europe (below).

Finally, and what some publications such as Carscoops argue is the most likely case, is that the vehicle heading to Detroit is the all-new Focus in ST trim – which would also be the world premiere of the new-generation small car.

The upcoming Focus is the first major overhaul of the Blue Oval’s popular nameplate since the current generation was first unveiled at the 2010 Paris motor show.

We recently saw spy images of a lightly-camouflaged Focus prototype in November (above), with the expectation the vehicle would be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March – Christmas could be coming early for Ford fans.
