2018 Wey P8 revealed

The all-new 2018 Wey P8 has been revealed at the Guangzhou motor show, becoming the Chinese company’s first plug-in hybrid SUV.

Set to go on sale in its home market of China in the first quarter of 2018, the P8 combines a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with electric motors on each axle – making for combined outputs of 250kW and 520Nm.

Drive is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain, the Wey P8 claims a 0-100km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds, which isn’t far off established hot hatches.

Meanwhile, the P8 can be charged via a 220V home charger, capable of fully replenishing the vehicle’s battery pack – of an undisclosed capacity – in four hours. The company says the P8 has a combined driving range of 660 kilometres.

In terms of its design, the P8 bears a strong resemblance to the Wey W01 and W02 revealed this time last year, along with the Haval HB-02 hybrid concept.

Other highlights include the standard fitment of driver-assistance technologies like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, 360-degree camera system and a video streaming rear-view mirror.

Company founder, and owner of parent company Haval, Jack Wey, said that the Chinese brand is also well on its way to autonomous-capable vehicles.

“Our XEV concept we showed at Frankfurt Motor Show has already reached [Level 3] of automation and we are on target to reach [Level 4] in the next two years,’ Wey said.

“We have focused our resources on building the largest station for autonomous driving and intelligent interconnection in China, which will be in operation by the end of this year.”

While the more premium Wey brand is currently reserved for the Chinese market, we could see a similar vehicle offered by parent Haval in the near future.

The HB-02 concept (above) is very similar in design to the Wey P8, and spawned the HB-03 coupe concept (below), which has been confirmed for an Australian introduction.

The HB-03 concept featured a 200kW/450Nm PHEV system, combining a smaller 1.5-litre turbo petrol with a 95kW/278Nm electric motor and 13kWh battery pack.

It’s likely the HB-03 will form the basis of the next-generation Haval H6 coupe, which should make it to local showrooms in 2018 or 2019.
