2018 Hyundai ix35: New China-only SUV unveiled in Shanghai

The Hyundai ix35 name lives on, but only in China, with a new model unveiled overnight at the 2017 Shanghai motor show.

The new China-only ix35 is 4435mm long, 1850mm wide, 1670mm tall, and rides on the same 2640mm wheelbase as the ix35 once sold in Australia. That makes it significantly bigger than the 4270mm long Hyundai ix25, also known as the Creta in India.

It is, however, only a smidgen smaller than the Tucson sold throughout the world, including China, which is 4475mm long, 1850mm wide, 1655mm tall, and has a 2670mm wheelbase.

The new ix35 has a version of Hyundai’s new cascading grille, as well as a more formal and upright appearance than the similarly-sized Tucson.

Motivation from the ix35 will come from either a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine or a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol motor. Transmission choices are said to include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch.

We expect the new ix35 to be a pitched at lower price points and marketed towards value conscious buyers. The new ix35 goes on sale in China at the end of 2017.

In Australia, the ix35 name was used for one generation on what was, essentially, a second-generation Hyundai Tucson crossover.
