Jeep Yuntu: Three-row concept SUV unveiled in Shanghai

The Jeep Yuntu concept, which previews a new China-only seven-seat SUV, has made its debut at the 2017 Shanghai motor show.

Developed by Fiat Chrysler and Guangzhou Auto, its joint venture Chinese automotive partner, the Jeep Yuntu concept gives us an insight into the brand’s new three-row, seven-seat crossover for the Chinese market.

Due to go into production in 2018, the showroom-ready version of the Yuntu will lose most, if not all, of this car’s motor show-friendly details, including the suicide doors, second row captain’s chairs and frameless side windows.

The interior is brighter, airier and more luxurious than seen on any previous Jeep vehicle, with white leather, thin shell seats, light wood highlights, and a minimalist aesthetic.

We would expect something a little more mainstream in the production vehicle, but the panoramic sunroof and entertainment units built into the front seat backs may survive the journey.

As we saw in the concept’s official teaser sketches, the Yuntu has slim LED head- and tail-lights, and a boxy, but modern exterior.

The Yuntu is said to feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with wireless charging, but Fiat Chrysler has yet to provide any details or specifics about the powertrain setup.

Not only is the car is also claimed to include a biometric security system, but it’s also said to include an autopilot system that works off-road thanks to a companion flying drone, which scans the path ahead.

At present, the Yuntu is pitched as a China-only model. The popular line of thought is that a version of the Yuntu may be sold in North America and other markets as a Chrysler, or possibly as a Dodge.
